海の中に火山島ができると、そこをよりどころにして珊瑚礁が形成されます。
これがfringing reefです。
fringe には「裾・外べり」の意味があるので島のすぐ周りにサンゴ礁があるのがイメージできると思います。
堡礁（ほしょう）とは？
② barrier reef 堡礁（ほしょう）
裾礁が形成された後に、火山島が沈下をはじめると、上方向に成長する珊瑚礁との間に浅瀬の礁湖（ラグーン）が形成されます。
この状態がbarrier reef です。
火山島の周りにサンゴ礁が barrier の様になっているのでイメージが付きやすいと思います。
※オーストラリアのグレート・バリア・リーフが有名です。
環礁（かんしょう）とは？
③ atoll 環礁（かんしょう）
堡礁の火山がさらに沈下し、海面から姿を消すとドーナツ状の輪の形の珊瑚礁だけが残されます。
これがatoll:環礁です。
環礁はモルディブで有名ですが、atollはモルディブで話されているディベヒ語が由来です。
