英語が得意だという人でも、意外と使いこなせていないのが
rather than や would rather (not) ではないでしょうか？
今回はこの表現を紹介します。

【意味】BというよりはむしろA
２つのものを比較する時に用います。
He is like our boss rather than our teacher.
(彼は私たちの先生というよりはむしろまるで上司のようだ）
※A(boss)＞B(teacher)の関係
would rather 動詞原形① (than 動詞原形②）
② would rather 動詞原形① (than 動詞原形②）
【意味】(②するよりも)むしろ①したい。
二つの動作を比べて、どちらをしたいかを比較します。
I would rather die than keep working for this company.
(この会社で働き続けるよりむしろ死んだほうがよい）
※動詞①（die) ＞動作②（keep working) の関係
would rather not 動詞原形
③ would rather not 動詞原形
【意味】 むしろ～したくない
基本的に上記の would rather の否定の意味なのです。
良くこの表現が使われるのは、以下の様にやんわりと誘いを断る時です。
Do you want to go fishing with me tomorrow？ーI‘d rather not.
(明日、私と一緒に釣りに行きませんか？ ー 遠慮しておきます。）
